Dolphins are highly intelligent creatures, which are generally classified as marine mammals. They are somewhat associated with porpoises and whales. Today, they play a significant role in popular culture, mainly because of their playful attitude and friendly appearance. These qualities have made them stars of marine theme parks, television shows and even motion pictures. Let’s take a closer look at these marine creatures including how much do dolphins weigh.

The Weight of Dolphins

How much do dolphins weigh? The size and weight of dolphins vary depending on species. For instance, bottlenose dolphins can be as heavy as 200 kilograms. Meanwhile, killer whales or orcas can reach weights of up to 4,535 kilograms. On the other hand, small dolphins only weigh around 30 kilograms. Add to that, the so-called Maui’s dolphins only weigh somewhere close to 40.82 kilograms.

Additional Information and Other Important Details

Although some species look like whales, they are still dolphins. These include short-finned pilot whales, false killer whales and melon-headed whales. The same also goes for other species such as long-finned pilot whales, pygmy killer whales and Orcinus orca. These animals are widely used in literature. For years, they have been the subject of numerous books such as Karen Hesse’s “The Music of Dolphins,” “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and Larry Niven’s “Known Space.”

Aside from literature, dolphins play important roles in animal-assisted therapy. For years, psychologists and other scientists are figuring ways where they can use these wonderful animals for treating developmental disabilities and psychological problems. Thanks to the presence of dolphinariums, the interest of people on these marine creatures was rekindled. Furthermore, it allowed people to have a closer look at these friendly and gentle animals.

Because dolphins are subject to numerous threats, humans are conducting various kinds of efforts to take care of these beautiful animals. Organizations like Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society as well as Mote Marine Laboratory are always there to take care of orphaned, stranded and wounded dolphins. Although they are gentle to people, these animals still have numerous natural enemies, most of which are ferocious marine predators such as great white sharks, tiger sharks and bull sharks.

For people who love these creatures, they can watch them in different kinds of motion pictures. Some of the popular dolphin films in the past include “The Day of the Dolphin” in 1973, “Orca” in 1977 and “Flipper” in 1963. Of course, do not forget the movie “Free Willy” in 1993, the science fiction TV show “seaQuest DSV in the 90s as well as the TV series “Flipper” that was aired in 1964.

How Much Do Alpacas Cost

The cost of alpacas depends on their quality. Non breeding are usually sold for at least $500. The breeding kind sells for at least $5,000. Some fetch prices of as high as $20,000. But alpaca owners put up with the expense because they expect to make profits from it.

High Quality Fiber

The biggest benefit is the top class fiber that the animals produce. The fiber is similar to cashmere, but it also has similarities with wool. What sets it apart is its strength, the strongest in nature.

In terms of insulation, it is five times better compared to wool. When the strength is fused with luster, the fiber becomes very valuable.

Value and Weight

The costs of alpacas are offset with the fleece they produce. On average the animal can produce 5 to 10 lbs every year. The best parts come from select areas on the body. These are the back and sides. This is known as the blanket area and weigh in around 4 lbs.

Rather than the weight, other factors determine fleece worth. These are the fineness, density, smoothness to touch etc. Depending on the quality, the selling rate starts at $10 per pound. If it is high quality, it can be sold for $45.

Where to Sell

These items are sold either in the cottage / artisan or commercial market. The former fetches a higher price. However, it is limited. While the cost of alpacas may be recovered more rapidly at the artisan market, the commercial is more accessible.

Caring for the Animal

Part of the expenses will go towards feeding and caring for the animal. Their diet consists mainly of grass and hay. Generally, two pounds of the food are needed per day. To keep it healthy, giving it vitamins and other supplements is recommended.

These supplements can be purchased in specialty stores. Giving them vitamins regularly is necessary. These will help the alpacas deal with extreme forms of weather and late lactation among other problems.

Shelter

The animals need protection from heat and strong winds. As you compute the cost of alpacas, include making a shelter among them. When designing a shelter, it should be set against the direction of the blowing wind. Stalls are not really necessary unless there are predators around.

Vaccination and Other Expenses

The cost may be reduced if you perform some of the vaccination yourself. Deworming can be done by the owner. However taking blood samples for examination should be done by a doctor.

Other vaccination shots they require are against tetanus and clostridium. Other than that, the animals are very strong and can withstand other illnesses.

By keeping their place clean, the alpacas will be able to fight off other diseases well. However if you maintain other livestock, you should keep them clean as well. Hygiene helps keep the alpacas healthy.

When you weigh the cost of alpacas, assess all the factors cited above. By accounting for all the facts and figures, you’ll have a simpler time determining if it is a worthy investment.

How Much Does An Elephant Weigh

There are many factors that affect the weight of an elephant. On average an adult weighs about 10,000 lbs. But there are various elements that can cause this figure to increase or decrease.

The African Elephants

The African savanna (bush elephants) are the largest variants alive today. On average they weigh over 16,000 lbs (over 8 tons). They can reach a height of over 13 ft. The largest one on record weighed over 13 tons. That is more or less 30,000 lbs. The longest tusks found so far measure 11 ft. The heaviest tusks weighed a combined 460 lbs.

The African type has many distinguishing characteristics over the regular elephant. Aside from size, its ears go down around the shoulder area. A fully grown male (bull) usually reaches a height of 13 ft (around 4 m). The weight of an elephant is around 15,300 lbs or 7,000 kg for this type.

Females (called cows) are smaller. The average height is 9 ft (3 m). Their weight average is 8,000 lbs or 3,600 kg. However females higher than 9 ft have been reported, but not yet confirmed.

Asian Elephants

Asian elephants are not as large as the bush elephants. Their ears don’t drape and they are shorter. While stockier, the males max out at 10 ft. That is about the size of the female bush elephant. The Asian male typically weighs 5,000 lbs (2,300 kg). Females reach heights of 8 ft (2.5 m) and weigh 6,500 lbs (3,000 kg).

Measuring the Weight of an Elephant

Trying to determine its true weight is difficult. Because weighing scales isn’t possible, scientists use other means. One way is to measure the animal’s girth, its length and the footpad.

The measurement is done in centimeters. The girth around the heart is then multiplied by 11.5. The length is multiplied by 7.55. The footpad is multiplied by 12.5. These are added to get a weight assessment. The resulting figure is its weight in kilograms. After that, it is merely a matter of converting it into pounds or tons.

Factors that Affect Weight

The estimates are based on elephants fed properly in zoos. The weight of an elephant will be influenced by their environment. Those living in the forests or fending for themselves weigh less. The abundance or lack thereof of food and water will also affect its weight. Obviously a sick elephant will lose appetite and also some pounds.

These animals by the way, are always growing. Whatever the average height / weight, it continues to increase as the animal is alive. Well fed babies weigh about 160 kg and gain a kilogram a day.

Their weight gain continues well into adulthood. To be more specific: the animal is equivalent to 80 people weighing 150 lbs each. That is also equal to a couple of pickup trucks. Other animals like the rhinoceros, do not come close.

Learning the weight of an elephant can be a fascinating activity. As one gets to know more about the animal, the appreciation for it increases too.

How Much Do Monkeys Cost

The cost of monkeys start at $1,500 and some can go up to $30,000 or more. Even if you can afford to buy one, there are other considerations that must be accounted for.

Permits

Aside from the money, you need to check with the local authorities to see if it is legal. Some allow them, but others don’t as they can be hard to control. Some of these animals are sold in the black market but most of them come from illegal sources. If you need to get a permit, you must submit all the necessary papers.

A Difficult Pet

But even if you can afford the high cost of monkeys, it can be very difficult to control them. These are not like dogs or cats you can pet around. Left on their own, the animals will pee everywhere, open the fridge and get the food. They can be very noisy and playful. Some have been known to damage furniture and pry open doors and windows.

Health and Safety Issues

People who own these pets will rarely get the chance to go out and travel because these creatures just can’t be left alone in the house. Finding someone to take care of them is hard as monkeys are
very hard to manage.

Another problem is that the animals bite. If you go out and take the monkey with you, it could bite someone. Not only will you lose the animal, but you could face a lawsuit too. So the cost of monkeys can go much higher in this respect.

Apart from building a good cage, you should also send the animal to a vet. This is the best way to be sure that it doesn’t carry a disease.

Diet

Unlike dogs or cats, monkeys require balanced and varying foods. If the food they consume is the same, they’ll lose appetite and boredom will set in. Their diet should consist not just of bananas but of other fruits.

These include apples, mangoes and papaya. Vegetables, both cooked and fresh are recommended too. To provide variety, you can give them yogurt, cereal and some eggs.

Cages

Of course, the cost of monkeys will include their home. The number one rule for cages is that the bigger it is, the better. It is also a good idea if you include various items there. You can throw in some leaves, tires and other assorted toys. These are necessary to prevent boredom from creeping in.

Cage cleanup should be done at least once a week. However, droppings and other wastes should be removed daily. Also add some shading to it so the animal doesn’t suffer because of the heat. Make sure that the cage is secure so it doesn’t attempt to bolt away.

But even if you build shade, it must still allow sunlight to get in. Most primates require plenty of sunshine.

As the facts show, the cost of monkeys can be substantial. If you want to have this exotic pet, you don’t just need money, but also time and dedication.
